This bespoke home gym was created for a renowned interior design company, whose client was inspired by old school gymnasiums and gentleman’s club interiors. Instead of a hi-tech, clinical looking space, their carefully curated mood board reflected the design intention for their basement gym to be a grown-up natural continuation of their home. It was important to them that this new space didn’t feel like an uncomfortable add-on.
With many people still preferring to work out at home (post-pandemic) instead of battling their way to their chosen piece of exercise equipment in their local gym or health club, creating a space in which to do so is a great way to incorporate wellness and vitality into the home without the hassle of an expensive gym membership.
A cleverly designed home gym can incorporate visual appeal and functionality, thereby making the prospect of using the space far more enticing!
The internet is a great place to start, with articles aplenty – and Pinterest literally brimming with beautiful, inspirational imagery highlighting how your space could look with a little time and effort.
For this gym, the custom-made timber weight racks were designed to resemble the traditional wooden wall bars that were a mainstay of gyms and schools during the last century. These vintage style bars, sometimes called wall bars or Swedish ladders, were in keeping with the overall scheme. Not only the right aesthetic, but they also usefully served to store our client’s free weights and other gym accoutrements. Constructed from birch plywood for strength, the bars were then covered in an oak veneer for a seamless finish.

Following the classic theme, AND also helped to source a number of vintage sporting pieces to enhance the space including an old leather medicine ball.
The result was a stunning and peaceful exercise space with an exquisite attention to detail. The ‘Hague’ blue Farrow & Ball custom panelled walls, and industrial-style pendant lamps, the oversized wooden-framed mirrors (cleverly hung with rope from wooden pegs), and the warm hues of the wood and the tan leather accessories work harmoniously to retain some of that old school vibe, but with a sophisticated, timeless glamour.
